Kitchen Backsplash Tile
Clean installation, precise cuts at outlets and cabinets, grout that stays looking right — serving all four North Shore communities.
A kitchen backsplash looks straightforward. In practice, it is one of the more cut-intensive tile jobs in a home — outlets, switches, under-cabinet trim, range hood surrounds, window returns, and countertop edges all require precise cuts. Sloppy cuts at outlets or poorly fitted edge trim are the most noticeable flaw in any backsplash job.
The detail work that makes it look right
We remove outlet covers before tiling and cut the tile to fit tight around the box — not around the cover plate. That way the cover plate sits flush against the tile rather than sitting on top of it. Under-cabinet edges get a clean-cut or metal trim piece depending on the tile thickness and the cabinet's reveal. Range hood surrounds are measured and cut individually.
Layout planning matters here too. We find the visual center of the backsplash and work out from there so the cuts on each side of the run are symmetrical. For patterns like herringbone or stacked horizontal, we dry-lay the first row before adhesive to confirm the layout reads the way you expect it to.
Tile styles we work with regularly
Subway tile
Classic and versatile. Available in 3x6, 4x8, 4x12, and other sizes. Grout joint size and color make a significant difference in the finished look.
Zellige
Handmade Moroccan clay tile with natural variation in color and surface. Requires white or light-gray thinset and careful grouting to avoid staining the face.
Large-format slab
Single-piece or minimal-joint looks using 12x24 or larger porcelain. Requires a flat, level wall for proper adhesion.
Mosaic and patterned
Mesh-backed tiles and cement encaustic patterns. Require consistent pressure across the face during installation to prevent lippage between individual pieces.
