What residential tile installation covers

Residential tile installation spans every tiled surface in a home that is not a bathroom or kitchen — entryways, mudrooms, laundry rooms, basement bar areas, living room feature walls, and fireplace surrounds. It also includes whole-home flooring projects where multiple rooms are tiled in a continuous layout.

The materials we work with vary widely depending on the space: large-format porcelain for open-plan living areas, natural slate or travertine for entryways, glass mosaic or stone mosaic for accent walls and bar cladding, ceramic for utility spaces. Each has its own installation requirements and its own substrate demands.

What makes a residential job different

Unlike a single bathroom or backsplash, whole-home tile projects involve transitions — between rooms, between tile and hardwood, between different tile formats. Getting those transitions to look intentional rather than accidental takes planning. We talk through every threshold and edge treatment during the estimate walkthrough.

Large-format tiles (anything 24x24 or larger) require a flatter substrate than smaller formats. We check with a 10-foot straightedge and correct high or low spots before setting tile. Skipping that check is how you end up with lippage — tiles that are not flush with each other — which is difficult to fix after the fact.

What's included

  • On-site measurement and layout planning
  • Substrate inspection and leveling as needed
  • Dry-lay before adhesive to confirm pattern and centering
  • Precision cuts at walls, thresholds, and obstacles
  • Thinset selection appropriate to the tile material and substrate
  • Grouting and sealing
  • Cleanup and walkthrough at completion

Where we work

Residential tile installation is available across all four of our service areas. Each community has its own housing character — ranch homes in Glenview, established Colonials in Northfield, newer construction in parts of Deerfield, and a mix of post-war and newer homes in Northbrook. We adjust our approach to the specific home, not a one-size-fits-all process.
